Grading Policy & Information
Our instructional vision ensures that children are assessed holistically and goals are created with:
-
Accuracy - We take time to know your child. Students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate what they know in each content area and teachers “assess” this knowledge in a variety of ways. We invest in the time to communicate with families about how our students are progressing. It is important that we ensure that our students and families have a clear understanding about which skills their children have mastered, as well as which areas they need to continue to work on.
-
Equity - We measure student learning in a variety of ways and provide opportunities and supports based on each student’s needs. Measures of learning might include the following: assessments, classwork, presentations, classroom discussions, conferring with teachers, standardized tests and screeners, group projects, hands-on projects, experiments, observations, IEP goals (if applicable), and language acquisition goals/stages (if applicable). We provide students with multiple learning opportunities and modalities, taking into consideration how each student learns best. Students are provided with opportunities for revision and are not penalized for late work. We understand that the most equitable classrooms provide access for all students and we responsively support students according to their needs.
-
Social-Emotional Well-Being - Teachers and staff know your child not only as a student, but as a person. We build strong classroom communities and through our PS 29 Code for Living, we teach students that respect, responsibility, empathy and integrity are essential to becoming good community members. Our values and approach foster development of the whole child - through a balance of academics, enrichment, self-expression, restorative practices and our commitment to social-emotional development. Everything that teachers and staff know about our students supports them in achieving their own personal learning goals in a safe and supportive environment.
Grading Scale
-
Grades 1-5: We use a 4-point grading scale (1-4) for the majority of our grades. This scale will be used for reading, writing, math, social studies (in grades 3-5), and science. The grade descriptions are as follows:
-
4 = Excels in standards
-
3 = Proficient in standards
-
2 = Below standards
-
1 = Well below standards
-
-
Specialty Grades (all grades) and Social Studies (in grades K-2):
-
Science will be graded using the same 1-4 scale described above (and 1-3 scale for Kindergarten).
-
Social Studies in grades K-2 will use a grade of P (pass) or F (fail).
-
For PE, Music, Drama, Art, and Library + Technology, we will use a grade of P (pass) or F (fail).
-
-
Final grades are an average of the 3 marking periods.
